When we dreamed of creating this Yoga Teacher Training program at All That Matters, we envisioned a course taught by the best faculty and yoga teachers in the industry.  We can proudly say that we have accomplished just that.  All That Matters is thrilled to announce that we have secured the authority on yoga, Devarshi Steven Hartman, founder of the Pranotthan School of Yoga and dean of the Pranotthan Yoga Guild, as our senior teacher in this venture.  Devarshi brings with him nearly forty years of experience as a student of yoga and an impressive 30 years of experience as a teacher of transformational yoga programs.  He is a faculty member of Nosara Yoga Institute’s Advanced Yoga Teacher Training and leads both 200 hour and 500 hour certifications across the United States.

In cooperation with Devarshi, we have gathered an impressive line-up of guest teachers which includes All That Matters’ founding yoga teacher Kendall Sheldon and Kripalu senior faculty member Grace Jull.  Together, these experienced, professional teachers will guide you on a passage of self-awakening from which you will emerge both a skilled yoga teacher and a confident, compassionate member of our community of yogis.

 

How Long Will It Take to Become a Yoga Teacher?

 

Beginning on October 3, 2013, this all-new 200 hour teacher training course will be making its debut in Rhode Island.  This exciting offering will weave itself into your life during eight weekends of intensive training which will be broken up over the course of seven months.  This weekend-format class will allow students to study the entire 200 hour yoga teacher training curriculum right here at All That Matters in Wakefield, RI.  That means no taking time off of work, rearranging childcare schedules, and leaving your family for weeks at a time to study at an out-of-state retreat.  This program is designed to fit into your busy life without infringing on all that matters to you.  Imagine yourself graduating this April with a certification to teach yoga and a whole new world of employment prospects--all without leaving Rhode Island!

 

How Much Does Yoga Teacher Training Cost?

All That Matters welcomed Heather in June 2013 as one of our fabulous new yoga teachers.

Heather has been immersed in the world of yoga since 2001.She received her 200-hour Prana Flow training at All That Matters, led by Coral Brown, in 2012.  She is currently pursuing her 500-hour certification.  As a dedicated yogini, and through her love of being outdoors, Heather draws inspiration from nature and its many forms.  Heather’s teaching style integrates the creative and energetic aspect of flow with attention to alignment and the importance of our breath energy (Prana).  She believes yoga is about community and offers space for students to experience their practice in a dynamic yet supportive environment where playfulness, compassion and self-acceptance are encouraged.

 

A tip from Heather to stay healthy and active:

“Get outside and start there- observe the light, the seasons, the changes.  Go for a walk- rain, sun or snow.  Be part of if all.  Don’t make excuses. What could be bad about that?”

September Recipe of the Month:  Carrot Cashew Soup

If this morning's chilly weather is any indication, fall is literally knocking at my door.  The children donned their sweatshirts en route to the bus stop, I retired my flip flops, and the dutch oven took its permanent seasonal post on the back burner of our stove.  In our house, this has long been the visual indicator that I have thrown in the towel on summer and accepted autumn into our home.  It will spend the next several months simmering with warm, rich soups to be eaten in our dining room or packed into thermoses and enjoyed on the sidelines during my children's evening sports events. 

 

I am excited to share yoga teacher Kendall Sheldon's Carrot Cashew soup recipe as the first installment of the All That Matters Featured Recipe Collection.  Originally adapted from the Moosewood Cookbook, she has been making this hearty fall soup since her children were young.  At this time of year, many of the ingredients are even readily avalable from local farmers at the farmers market.  Enjoy the recipe, the soup, and the smell of home as it wafts through your kitchen.  Happy September!

Carrot Cashew Soup

2 lbs Carrots washed and cut into 1-2 inch slices

4 cups water or soup stock

1 1/2 tsp. salt

1 medium potato, chopped

Combine carrots, water or soup stock, salt, and potato in a pot and bring to a boil.  Cover and let simmer for 12-15 minutes.  Let cool.

3-4 Tbsp Olive Oil or butter

1 cup sliced onion

1-2 small cloves garlic

1/3 cup chopped toasted cashews

Saute onion, garlic, and cashews in olive oil or butter until onions are clear.

Combine ingredients and puree together until smooth.  Return to low heat and whisk in one of the following:

1 cup milk

1 cup yogurt

1 cup heavy cream

3/4 cup sour cream

Season with either 1 tsp freshly grated ginger, sauteed in butter or a pinch of thyme, basil, and marjoram

Garnish with toasted cashews, yogurt, or sour cream

If you could learn a simple, five-second breathing exercise that could shift your energy and lift your mood, providing a natural remedy for depression and anxiety, would you try it? There are no contraindications for this practice and you can do it anywhere. It’s almost too simple to be true, but try this with me right now, and feel the difference for yourself.

 

 

 

The “Smile Breath” is easy enough that you can read the following instructions, and then close your eyes to practice. Or, if you prefer, keep your eyes open and practice as you read. Take a deep inhale through the nose, hold the breath for a heartbeat or two, and then as you exhale through the nostrils, drop your chin to your chest. Hold the breath out for a heartbeat or two, as you lift the corners of your mouth. Inhale and lift your head. Exhale and open your eyes. How do you feel? If you’re like me and my students and clients, you likely feel calmer.

 

 

 

So what elements of the Smile Breath might affect your mood? First of all, to practice this simple breath, you need to pause for a moment, taking a break from the thoughts and feelings rolling through your mind. Second, taking just one deep breath uses more of your lungs than you may have been using the moment before. In that instant, you are bringing more oxygen into your system, feeding your brain. Think about the slumped shoulders and shallow breath that often accompanies depression. Think about the short shallow breath that often accompanies anxiety. In both anxiety and depression, there is often not enough oxygen in the blood flowing to the brain. Taking a deep breath can begin to reverse that. Third, when you lift the corners of your mouth, you are likely lifting the mood. A 2006 small-scale pilot trial, published in the Journal of Dermatologic Surgery, found that Botox injected into frown lines around the mouth or in forehead furrows of 10 women eliminated depression symptoms in nine of them and reduced symptoms in the 10th. (Finzi, 2006) I’m not suggesting you get Botox injected into your third eye, but what this study shows is that when you change the muscles of our face, we are affecting our mood.

 

 

 

Previous research has shown that the 12-step adage, “fake it until you make it,” may have some validity. More than twenty years ago, researchers at Loma Linda University School of Medicine showed the biochemical changes produced by laughter—reductions in serum levels of cortisol, dopac, and epinephrine. (Berk, 1989) Since then, a number of studies have looked at the efficacy of laughter and smiling in improving self-efficacy in the workplace, mood in cancer patients, depression in the elderly, and the pre-operative effects on children undergoing surgery. (Shahidi, Mojtahed, Modabbernia, Mojtahed, Shafiabady, Delavar, Honari, 2011; Noji, Takayanagi, 2010; Mora-Ripoll, 2010; Ko, Youn, 2011 Jul;11) In all cases reviewed, laughing “for no reason” has had a positive effect on mood. The body doesn’t know the difference. Your dopamine level is going to increase and other feel-good chemicals are likely to elevate whether you are smiling “for the camera” or for real. Not only can a smile be invited into a simple breathing practice as above, but many of the mood-elevating pranayama breathing practices in my book, Yoga Skills for Therapists: Effective Practices for Mood Management physically duplicate a good belly laugh.
