This year, All That Matters was thrilled to add something new to our repertoire of yoga classes and meditations. At the dawn of each new season, we will celebrate by offering 108 sun salutations to the earth. The first of these events will fall on the spring, or vernal equinox, followed by the summer solstice (the opening of yoga on the beach!), the autumnal equinox, and finally the winter solstice.
On Saturday, March 22, 2014, All That Matters will open its arms wide, welcoming the return of spring! We would love for you to join us to welcome this season of rebirth by participating in a practice that is not only physically and mentally demanding, but part of a ritual that is observed around the world.
Why 108 Sun Salutations?
The number 108 has a great deal of symbolism in yogic philosophy, in Indian and Jewish culture, and is the number of beads on a Tibetan mala and Catholic rosary. It is also twelve times the number 9, which is the number of vinyasas (movements linked to breath) in a Sun Salutation.
What is a Sun Salutation? (and what if I can’t do all 108?)
A Sun Salutation is a series of nine poses linked by the breath. The rhythmic, flowing movement of this practice--called Vinyasa Yoga--is said to detoxify, massage, and stimulate every organ in the body. Challenging one’s self to perform 108 Sun Salutations is an endurance exercise like no other. And if you don’t think you’re up for the challenge of 108 asanas, no need to fret. At any time, you are welcome to drop into child pose and take in the energy of the room.
Come to this new addition to our program schedule and reach your arms to the sky as you stretch your limits in this ritual to welcome a long-awaited spring season. Gather with others and set your intentions for abundance, fertile soil, peace, joy, happiness, and more as you blossom into this next cycle of growth. Register now!
